Wellbeing in Nature - Therapy
Just being in nature can help soothe unhelpful emotional states, a fact that is backed up by many scientific studies and research papers.
Understanding why this happens is helpful to understanding how engaging with therapy in a nature environment can be so beneficial. Simply put, our senses are engaged by nature itself, in a sort of nature-fascination kind of way, effectively turning down the volume of busy, busy and often unhelpful thinking going on. Imagine turning down a radio that’s so loud it’s almost painful on your ears. Can you just, for a moment, visualise that right now – imagine a radio on so really loud that it hurts your ears. Now, see yourself gently turning down the volume dial. Ask yourself, how does that feel?
Of course, turning down the volume of unhelpful thoughts isn’t going to stop them coming back again. But, with less unhelpful ‘noise’ going on, the possibility for considering new ways of thinking can flourish. This takes time, of course, because retraining the brain to respond differently to ingrained habits of thinking takes time…!
We offer group and one-to-one nature therapy sessions for adults and children. Use the quick links below to find out more about what interests you.

Wellbeing Wednesdays
This 2-hour wellbeing session runs on a Wednesday morning between 10 a.m. and 12 noon. We work with the 5-ways to wellbeing model that involves, quite simply,
Get active – Encouraging gentle movements involved with bending and stretch in connection with light woodland management tasks such as trimming back brambles from around the base of tubed trees.
Get social – We always take time to make a brew, enjoy some cake and ‘just being’ with others in the beautiful, tranquil woodland.
Learn something new – Sometimes we learn something new to do with the woodland and sometimes something new about ourselves through ‘just being’ in the woodland.
Care for the environment – We do that by planning and creating habitats that support biodiversity in the woodland.
Give back – We experience a reciprocity with nature through giving our time to nurturing the woodland, which gives back to us through making us smile more from the inside.
Over time our Wellbeing Wednesday participants find that the sessions have a cumulative effect with helping them maintain resilience with often challenging circumstances they are dealing with in their day to day lives. They may be caring for a family member, or coming to terms with a terminal illness diagnosis. These sessions provide a valuable sense of being with like-minded others where support is unconditional and tea and cake is provided, unconditionally.
Suitable for adults who are reasonably steady on their feet. A physical and mental health declaration is required, prior to joining these sessions, for safety and safeguarding purposes.
Cost: just £3/session

Nature-based therapy for children
Does your child experience issues of low-mood, anger, social withdrawal or generalised anxiety? Do they respond positively to being in an outdoor environment? Nature-therapy sessions could be really appropriate for supporting them to effect helpful change in the way they think, feel and behave.
A series of 6 woodland-based sessions can deliver much in the way of developing self-esteem, confidence and building resilience.
The sessions would be delivered by Susan Collini, a qualified teacher, forest school leader and hypno-psychotherapist who has over 25 years of experience working with both neuro-typical and neuro-diverse children.
Here is a review given by a parent whose child recently attended a number of sessions.
“Just such a wonderful woodland environment where my child felt comfortable enough to open up, try new things, learn new skills and express his feelings. Susan took the time to understand my child’s individual needs and tailored her sessions accordingly. My child has made significant progress under her care, developing coping strategies and gaining confidence. Yesterday he said that she had given him a more ‘positive mindset”.

An initial free 30-minute consultation on Zoom is offered, prior to booking, for discussion about the issues the child is experiencing.
Safeguarding requirements mean that a parent/carer/teaching support worker must attend the therapy session(s) and be prepared to stay within sight of the child and therapist during the session(s).
Outdoor Tribe can provide nature-based therapy for schools
We are happy to work directly with schools to facilitate small-group sessions for children experiencing issues within the school environment, which are having a detrimental effect on their ability to learn. Please contact us to initiate a conversation to discuss this option further.

Nature-based therapy for adults
Some people really struggle with attending therapy sessions within 4-walls, finding the experience too emotionally stressful.
Some people find it easier to connect with how they are feeling inside when they are in a nature place that seems to turn down the volume on their incessantly ‘chattering’ mind.
Most people like to feel good inside! Being out in nature, so long as you are wearing the right clothing for the weather, has been scientificlly proven to help people connect more deeply with themselves, which is absolutely necessary if they are to be successful in bringing about desired change to the way they think, feel and consequently behave.
Behaviours, simply, are fuelled by thoughts and emotions that arise unbidden, in less than a blink of an eye. What’s needed is to remove ‘triggers’, which is why being out in nature can be so helpful. Basically, your senses are so busy making sense of what’s all around you, above, below, in front or behind of you that the brain has less propensity to dish up habitual, unhelpful ways of thinking that take you round and round in circles (does this resonate with you?)
Being out in nature is also inherently relaxing in ways that might surprise you. Did you know that listening to birdsong sends automatic signals to your brain that you can relax? The reason behind this phenomenon is linked to our ancestors who lived much more closely with nature than we do today and relied on things like birdsong to indicate there was no dinosaur around the corner waiting to eat them!
Susan Collini, a qualified hypno-psychotherapist (MNCH(REG) – HPD – CNHC – HYPDIP (CECCH) delivers therapy sessions fully outdoors or a mixture of outdoors and indoors, as there are suitable locations in the woodland to facilitate both.
